Working online: the categorical and persuasive search

An increasing number of Americans are working from home. Whether they're self-employed entrepreneurs running small accounting services, or they work remotely for multinational consulting firms, about 30 million of us work from a home office at least once a week. And that number is expected to rise by 63% in the next five years, according to a study by the Remote Work Research Network.

An estimated three million American professionals never advance in an office outside their home, says Kenneth Raposa, writing for Forbes (02/16/2013), and another 54% say they are happier that way. A total of 47% of people with the option to work remotely are "very satisfied" with their job, compared to 27% of those who work in an office, according to Telework. About 90% of those who work from home say they are happier with their work-life balance, although they tend to work harder and for longer.

According to Telework, working from home half-time saves more than $10,000 per employee per year, according to teleworking — as a result of increased productivity, lower facility costs, reduced absenteeism, and lower employee turnover. Employees save between $1,600 and $6,800 and 15 days of time simply by using them to drive to work or use public transportation.

More than two-thirds of employers report an increase in productivity among remote workers. Contributing factors include fewer interruptions from colleagues, more effective time management, feelings of empowerment, flexible working hours, and often, even longer hours. The home office never closes.

The Remote Work Research Network said Best Buy's average productivity increased 35% through its flexible work program. British Telecom estimates a 20% increase in productivity with remote work. Alpine Access, one of the nation's largest virtual employers, attributes a 30% increase in sales and a 90% decrease in customer complaints to its agents who work from home. Teleworking said remote workers at American Express handled 26% more calls and generated 43% more business than their office counterparts.

Home workers often continue to work when they are sick. They can return to work more quickly after pregnancy or surgery. They are able to handle personal appointments (cable installer, appliance delivery, teacher consultations, etc) without losing an entire day of work.

In cities like Chicago, Houston, and Seattle, travelers during peak times often need to allow twice as long as normal if they want to make sure they arrive on time. For commuters stuck in traffic every day, time spent in the car cuts productivity in half. Nationwide, 4.2 billion hours are spent driving in traffic each year, which Telework Research said steals $78 billion in productivity from the US economy. Additionally, traffic jams shut down 2.9 billion gallons of gas, releasing more than 58 million additional pounds of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each year.
